Remove Paint from Light Fixtures

If you accidentally get paint on a light fixture and didn’t notice before it dried, or someone did, it’s the end of the fixture. Follow these easy steps to remove the paint and make your fixtures look new again, or at least clean.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Light Fixture Splattered with Paint
  • An Eraser Sponge
  • Nail Polish Remover
  • Cotton Balls
  • A Cloth
  1. Step 1

Access the amount of paint on the light fixture. Before using the nail polish remover, you should try the eraser sponge. Follow the directions on the sponge, but make sure that if you need to wet the sponge that it is not dripping wet.

  2. Step 2

The eraser sponge will work on many finishes without harming it and should be the first thing you try. If the eraser sponge doesn’t work then you will need to try the nail polish remover. Dab a few cotton balls with nail polish remover and squeeze any excess into the sink.

  3. Step 3

Gently rub the paint spots with the nail polish remover and let it set for a minute or two.

  4. Step 4

Take the cloth and rub the spots to remove the paint. If some paint is still present, repeat Step 3.

  5. Step 5

Once the paint is completely removed, lightly dampen the cloth and wipe the light fixture clean.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are in a well ventilated area when using the nail polish remover.
  • Make sure the lights are turned off when cleaning with any fluid, so you escape the possibility of electrical shock.
