Everyone wants to save energy in these days of high fuel costs. Home heating energy is a big drain on your budget. Here is a cheap temporary method to quickly and easily fix drafts in your older home without spending a bucket of dough.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • plastic bags left from grocery shopping
  • a table knife

Step1
Find the drafty spots in your home by checking all the windows and doors. You will know it is "drafty" when you feel the cold air seeping in around the edges. If you are a smoker a real good way to find those drafts is to hold your lit cigarette near the suspected draft and watch to see if the smoke blows away.
Step2
Grab your plastic bag and your table knife.
Step3
Stuff the plastic bag bit by bit into the crack with your table knife. stretch it out and just push a tiny bit of the bag at a time into the crack with your table knife. When it gets to a point that you can no longer push any more plastic into the crack, just cut off the left over plastic that did not fit into the crack with scissors and you are done! Presto! No more air leaks!

Tips & Warnings

  • This only works for doors or windows you dont open very often!
  • This is a "quick fix" Next summer when the weather is warm you need to replace your sealants and weather stripping around all doors and windows that need it. Remember to re-glaze your windows also!
