Cleaning dog poop from your back yard is not a fun chore. It is necessary for the 3-S factor: S-1 is for sanitation. Dog poop draws flies that raise their families in the dog muck. S-2 is the smell. Dog poop stinks, ruining the general ambiance of backyard barbecue. S-3 is for shoes. Dog poop sticks to your shoes like cement, only less pleasant. With planning, you can make your Dog Poop Patrol a 5-minute chore and make the poop-recycling easier.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 flip-top plastic trash cans
  • Trash can liners
  • Poop bags
  • Diaper pail or car air freshener
  • Baking soda
  1. Step 1
    Plastic trash can

Take one flip-top or other lidded plastic trash can. This should be easy to open and close. Place it near your regular garbage can.

  2. Step 2

Line the trash can with a sturdy plastic bag. You may want to put a diaper pail deodorizer or car deodorizer in the trash can. Some people prefer to sprinkle baking soda or a scoop of scented cat litter in the bottom of the bag.

  3. Step 3

Use your second plastic trash can to store extra liners, recycled plastic store bags and doggy poop or diaper disposal bags. You now have 3 sizes of bags. The smallest are the small store bags, doggy poop or diaper disposal bags. The medium size are larger store bags. The large bags are your can liner bags. This is your supply bin.

Grab a few small bags and a medium bag. If your dog has one poop spot, go pick up the deposits with the small bags. Put your hand in the bag like a glove, grab the pile, and turn the bag inside out. Knot the bag end and drop it in your medium bag. When you have a load, take the medium bag back and drop it in the trash can. Repeat as needed.

  5. Step 5

If your dog is a random mound builder, start from your trash cans and work a grid to pick up deposits. In warm weather, flies will be your scouts. Check behind bushes and at the top of hills, a favorite spot for big dogs.

  6. Step 6

Just before garbage day, take the lid off your poop can and tie the plastic liner bag shut. Dump it in your street garbage can. Reline the trash can now. You will forget to do it later and will only remember when you have an overflowing bag of oozing dog mess in your hand and are headed for the poop station.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch your dog. Chances are he has a regular poop time before or after a meal. You can check out the drop zone and clean up seconds after the dog leaves the scene of the crime.
  • Diaper disposal bags are cheap. They are a little smaller than commercial dog bags and often have tie handles. They come in packs of 50 to 100 bags.
  • Do not put your dog deposits in a recycle green waste bin. In most communities this is illegal.
