Have you ever wanted to help your community but are unsure where to start? The easiest way is to contact your animal shelter. Their needs are as simple as the love their clients give, it is also an easy project to involve kids in as it gets there competitiveness and love for animals involved and teaches responsibility for caring for those in need at the same time

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Love, caring and consideration
  • Fiscal or moral responsiblity
  • Or just a need to clean out some closets
  1. Step 1

    Many shelters are on the internet look up your local one and click on their wish list it will tell you what they are in most need of it is usually supplies. This is not an all inclusive list just what they need most so toys and treats are always welcome.

    If you are a teacher or involved with children this can be a good project. It teaches the importance of giving and caring.
    Organize them to bring in things from home ,old towels, blankets, cleaning supplies etc. Take them to the shelter so that they can see what their donations are for.

    Getting involved with shelters is also a rewarding pastime, perhaps your friend recently died and your not ready to commit but are missing companionship, an hour or two a week training ,socializing or just walking a pet can make a difference and who knows maybe that someone special is there for you.

    If you are good at fundraising or organizing things this is your chance. Hold a street wide garage sale or walk with your friends to raise funds, no amount is to small.

    Let us not forget our furry friends the cats, food, scratching posts and toys are also needed for them. While many can't be walked just cuddling with someone can help them get ready for there 4 ever home

    Look around your home have you lost someone you love and are unable to reuse their collar, leash, dish and favorite blanket, then give it away you are doing a good thing and it will help with your grieving process.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you volunteer watch your heart you might find yourself taking someone home and if you do may the love follow you forever, keep you warm at night and active by days knowing that you are someone's hero.

on 4/29/2008 Should have listened to my how to raise funds article. Some people just don't want to work for what they want, thus the hippie theroy/democratic misconception. Who lives for others at their own expense? freaks! I know my income tax rebate is coming. I'm sending mine back asking them to put it towards the national debt and SSI not a Dog shelter. Hey how about helping some AIDS victims in South America? Worthy cause?

on 3/3/2008 Hey, this is a great article. I hope it brings much needed attention to the needs of shelters. Everyone can go zootoo.com to find all kinds of info about pets. We are trying to gets a massive amount of points for the Town of Cornwall Shelter. These points go toward the chance of winning a makeover for first place and cash for the next 19 shelters--BUT we need you to go to zootoo.com and sign up --the zip code you enter will be 12518 and the town will be Cornwall. This is a small shelter that needs lots of help. If you sign up the shelter gets 100 points and if you do reviews on products they get 20 points per each review. Please help.
