Stress seeks release. Those who are desperate for money are sometimes driven to take it. As social pressures mount, expect an increase in violence.

Instructions

    • 1

Don't panic. Keep thinking and acting. If you are assaulted remember that this is not a fight at school recess. No rules apply. Never initiate violence. It's not only illegal, but can unleash stunning retribution.

    • 2

Don't put yourself in a place where you're inviting assault. If you routinely walk urban areas at night, don't dress in your business best. If your car breaks down and you must get through a seedy neighborhood, don't cower. Walk confidently even though your guts may be churning. Be aware of your surrounding and never look away from somebody who approaches you for a question.

    • 3

Carry pepper spray. Also known as OC gas, capsicum spray, or oleoresin capsicum it's a chemical compound that irritates the eyes, nose and throat of your attacker causing tears, pain, trouble breathing and temporary blindness. It's meant to be non lethal. Spray it hard in your assailant's face and get away. Many products also add a dye to help identify your attacker later. Be sure to check with local laws.

    • 4

Consider carrying a knife. Knife use is more problematic, because you have to be prepared to use it. If you brandish a knife you can only look foolish if you have little experience with one. Keep it concealed, mentally rehearse where you are about to strike. Do so quickly as the threat is upon you. Knife laws vary tremendously from state to state.

    • 5

Know where your assailant is vulnerable. If you simply try to stab somebody in the chest, you probably won't reach his heart because most pocket knives are too short. The neck makes a good target especially along the carotid artery which is close to the surface. It's the artery that you can see pulsing. Slash in two rapid movements, one on each side. An eye is a good unexpected target. A thrust will cause a great deal of pain and blindness.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you must, consider a handgun.
