Scoring points in the low post can be a great offensive weapon for any team. Making an good entry pass into a post player is difficult unless you are taught the proper method. This article focuses on how to make that pass from the wing position.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Basketball
  • Guard (Wing)
  • Post Player
Step1
The wing catches the pass from the point guard and gets into Triple Threat position. In Triple Threat position:
1. Your knees are bent
2. You are square to the basket
3. You have chosen a pivot foot
4. You are protecting the ball
5. You are in a position to dribble, pass, or shoot
Step2
The post should position himself/herself to create a straight line from the wing to the post player to the basket. With this straight line, it forces to post defender to choose which side to guard on the post player. If the defender decides to just stand behind the post player, the pass becomes much easier.
Step3
Once the post player has established position and the defender has established which side he/she will favor, the post player should put out the hand away from the defender. The hand should be about waist high and will be the target for the wing player's pass.
Step4
The wing player should fake a pass over the head of his/her defender. This will get the defender to react by extending his/her body up to knock down the pass.
Step5
With the defender extended up, the wing player get low and should step forward (keeping pivot foot planted) and put his/her foot in line with the defender's foot. This will create an open space for a pass.
Step6
Once you have created the open space, make a quick bounce pass to the target. The bounce should be thrown 2/3 of the way to the post player and skip quickly into the post player's hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the wing is not in a straight line with the post player or needs to create more space, take 1 or 2 dribbles to accomplish this.
  • Post player must be in a strong position - see "How to Get in Proper Post Position in Basketball" video and article.
  • The step towards the defender can be done with either foot - be sure that you have established your pivot foot. Crossing your feet over can be an effective change of pace to keep the defender off guard.
