You’re the proud new owner of a puppy. You’re ready to train him, but before any of that can be done, you have to make sure your house is only safe from them as well as for them. Here are a few tips on how to make your house puppy-proof.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check heights. Anything that is breakable, chewable or unstable needs to be moved at least two feet off the ground. A puppy can get excited or curious and be completely unaware of how dangerous or valuable an object might be. Until you’ve had time to train them on what is a toy and what is not, make sure they don’t have access to them.

  2. Step 2

Steam clean and sanitize. If you've ever had pets in your home before, or you’re moving into a new home, clean the carpet as thoroughly as possible. Even puppies have a sense of smell, and if they think a place smells like another dog, they may decide to start leaving their own marks; this will make it harder for you to housetrain them. So steam clean the carpets and try to get rid of old pet odors.

  3. Step 3

Keep electicity out of reach. Puppies like to chew, lick, and play with anything they can find. So power cords and objects that have the ability to shock need to be moved or hidden so that puppies can’t get their teeth into them.

  4. Step 4

Protect the walls. Puppies are explorers, and they will try to use the walls as support to reach anything they can. Their claws will leave marks everywhere, so put up paneling on the lower section of the walls to keep claw marks and scratches to a minimum.

Tips & Warnings
  • When puppies are young, they don’t understand what they’ve done wrong, and negative punishment isn’t effective; use positive motivation in the formative weeks of the puppy’s training.
