While South Carolina is best known for its beaches, more tourists are learning about the mountains that form a northern edge for the state. Scenic Highway 11 is a 120-mile winding road that runs through the foothills of this region. Easily accessible off Interstate 85, Highway 11 is a perfect drive for those looking to tour South Carolina's upcountry.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which way to go. Highway 11 is accessible at two points that are roughly 91 miles apart along Interstate 85. One is exit 1, just off the Georgia state border. The other is exit 92, which is close to the North Carolina border. For the purposes of this article, assume the driver takes exit 1.

  2. Step 2

Stop in the Curiosity Shop, which is about four miles into the journey. Just look for the big question mark. This is a great place to pick up some local merchandise or just browse.

  3. Step 3

    Whitewater Falls

Stop at Whitewater Falls, which is about 32 miles into the trip. It is the highest set of waterfalls east of the Missiippi River, and always a great photo op.

  4. Step 4

Get your camera ready. After about 50 miles, you will be up close to Table Rock State Park. The park, which has ponds, a museum, hiking trail and camping, is best known for the large rock face that overlooks it.

  5. Step 5

Stop for something to eat. Places such as Aunt Sue's Country Corner is a great place to get some ice cream. Ask for the Moose Tracks.

  6. Step 6

Stop for some peaches, apples and strawberries. There are plenty of roadside stands that dot the road. They are always fresh.

  7. Step 7

Learn some history. While there are many great side trips off the road to investigate, you will want to check out Cowpens National Battlefield, which was the site of an important American Revolution battle. The park is well laid out and the museum has some great artifacts.

  8. Step 8

Finish Up. When you see the giant peach, you will know you are nearing the end of Highway 11 and getting back to I-85.
