Defining the colors to use in your home is a relatively easy process. The colors should be derived from those that already surround your home and are in the fixtures, floors and cabinets. Once you've determined your palette, decorating is a snap.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the colors based on what exists. Cabinets, floors and fixtures are already in your home. Don't fight them, work with the colors that already exist.

  2. Step 2

Consider what's outside in your garden. If you have beautiful eucalyptus trees right outside, they can provide wonderful color. Similarly, roses or wisteria can suggest certain colors that will work well.

  3. Step 3

Consider fabric samples that you think might work with what you have in your home. Look at them in all different lighting to see how they appear. Don't limit your choices, look at as many as you need before narrowing down.

  4. Step 4

Select three or four main colors. They should be complementary and work with all areas of your house.

  5. Step 5

Decide on paint and major furniture pieces that best use one of those colors. This is your key color.

  6. Step 6

Purchase accessories (rugs, art, pillows and window treatments) that use the other two or three colors you selected.

  7. Step 7

Spend most of your budget on good paint and large pieces. Smaller accessories can be picked up anywhere from designer showcases to the local budget store once you know the colors you're looking for.
