How to Run a Community Service Organization

Community service organizations are an integral part of many towns. They provide a social network for newcomers who just moved in, old timers who've built the town and those in between. They also provide an opportunity to pool resources to serve others. Here are some tips on running such a diverse group.

1. Realize that everyone joins for a different reason. Some people are drawn to serve others, while some folks just want to make new friends. Don't attempt to rigidly define the organization. Be open to providing both social and service opportunities.

2. Know that not everyone will come through. It's a volunteer organization, so you don't have the ability to dock a bonus or write an employee up if they don't respect their commitments. Be realistic and overstaff, where possible, any key committees in deference to this reality.

3. Be aware that circumstances change. Volunteers have life changes that often interfere with their best intentions. Be flexible in your leadership style so that members are comfortable alerting you to these changes early on.

4. Focus on the goal. Most community service organizations have an overall mission. Remind members of that mission or goal and keep the organization moving towards it. Momentary issues become far less momentous when you take a larger perspective.
