How to Strap a Fussy Infant Into a Car Seat

Most infants go through a period during which they absolutely hate being strapped into a car seat. The baby squirms, fusses and cries while you try to buckle her in. Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use to distract your baby long enough to get her strapped into that car seat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Toys
  • Small bag or backpack

Step1
Pack a small bag or backpack with a few of your baby’s favorite toys and board books. Add a few baby-safe objects from around the house that he might find intriguing. Store the bag in the car near the baby’s car seat.
Step2
Feed your baby and change his diaper before you leave the house. A well fed, dry baby is a happy baby.
Step3
Dress your baby in comfortable clothing. He’ll be much happier sitting in his car seat wearing a bodysuit rather than a pair of denim overalls.
Step4
Sing or talk to your baby as you get into the car and place him in the car seat. If you’re smiling and having a good time, he may think it’s a game.
Step5
Ask a passenger to play peek-a-boo with the baby through the window while you buckle him into his seat.
Step6
Pick out a fun toy and encourage your baby to play with it while you strap him into the car. Chances are, he’ll want to continue playing with it while you’re driving, which will keep him happier even longer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never let your child play with an unsafe toy or object.
