Second Story Software Company has been in business since 1998 and their sole product is TaxAct software. While many companies say that their Income Tax software is easy, TaxAct has made doing your taxes a no-brainer.

From Quick Guide: Tax Preparation Software
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the TaxAct website and determine which version of the software is best for you. If the free version suits, stick with that. If not, look at the paid options.

  2. Step 2

Make your choice and pay for the software using a credit or debit card. Once the transaction is complete, you will be taken to the page where you can download the software.

  3. Step 3

Install the software on your computer. Open the program by clicking on the icon on your desktop.

  4. Step 4

Start at the beginning and fill out the requested information. Follow the prompts to work through the software.

  5. Step 5

Read through the alerts once you have completed the Q & A. These alerts will notify you of things you may have missed.

  6. Step 6

Print out a copy of your completed return and review it to make sure you typed all numbers in correctly.

  7. Step 7

Click on the E-file button and submit your taxes. Instructions are on every page and the process is simple.

  8. Step 8

Wait for your refund. Most refunds filed electronically take less than a month.

Tips & Warnings
  • In some versions of the software, you will have to pay a small fee to e-file your Federal taxes. This fee is much less than if you paid a tax preparer to do it for you.
  • TaxAct keeps a running total of your refunds (or amount owed) in the upper right hand corner of the screen at all times.
  • TaxAct support is always helpful. If you have questions, email or phone their support team.
