How to Treat Acne Internally

Topical remedies for acne abound, but these remedies ignore one of the main causes of acne, which is internal. Skin is one of our major organs of elimination, which means that toxins built up from poor digestion and diet come out through the skin. Further problems come from hormonal imbalance. But with a little knowledge of nutrition, supplements and internal health, you can fight acne at the source.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat your greens. Alkaline foods such as vegetables help to balance Ph levels and aid metabolism. Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juice daily is widely reputed to aid internal cleansing and produce clear, glowing skin.

  2. Step 2

Pay attention to your digestion. Do you feel tired for long periods after eating? Do you eliminate regularly? Do you experience gas? Take steps to aid your digestion as necessary. You can take probiotic supplements, enzymes and/or lecithin, which helps to emulsify fats.

  3. Step 3

Drink lots of water. Water is the universal solvent. It helps break down even the heaviest foods and cleanse the body of wastes before your skin has to deal with them. Most people don't realize how thirsty they are, but once you start drinking more water, you'll be surprised at how much you want.

  4. Step 4

Balance your hormones, especially if you're a woman who suffers from once-a-month breakouts. A strong surge of premenstrual hormones increases sebum production, not to mention stress, which also contributes to acne. Consider an herbal supplement for women, such as don quai. Raspberry tea is also very good for women.

  5. Step 5

Use vitamin A and zinc for damage control. Vitamin A is essential to skin repair and a great source of antioxidants. It's found in orange fruits and vegetables such as carrots, and in salmon. Zinc protects against inflammation and infection, and also helps to catalyze Vitamin A. It is found primarily in meats, but also in legumes and whole grains. If you're a vegetarian, you may prefer to take it as a supplement.

  6. Step 6

Cleanse your colon. Routine maintenance is important, but sometimes more drastic measures are needed to start with a clean slate. A good colon cleanse will make everything work better--digestion, metabolism and elimination. The two main ways of cleansing are external, with an enema or colonic, and internal, using fiber or oxygen supplements. It usually takes three to ten days on a restricted diet. Your skin will clear right away.
