Animal shelters vary from one to the next. Some animal shelters take great care to provide the animals in their care with adequate treatment and a comfortable place to await the love of a family to adopt him/her. On the other hand some shelters provide less then adequate care to the animals they have in the custody.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Compassion
  • A love for animals

Step1
Some shelters are government funded while some are privately owned. Some of those shelters are run by local humane societies also. The funds that the shelter receive to care for the animals also varies as some are run strictly on donations and some are funded with donations and tax support as well. Some of the ones that are funded with the help of tax support are also able to come in and take some animals for experimenters.
Step2
That policy needs to be permanently abolished from all of the shelters across the world. There is no reason in this day and age that animals should be tested on. After all the years of animals being tested on, we should already know what is good and what is bad for us to use. With that in mind ask your local shelter where they get their funding from and if this is one of the stipulations if the receive tax support money. If it is then ask the shelter what they are doing to work against this. You can start up a petition in your area to debate the issue and have this banned. Campaign against a new law in your city or state.
Step3
f you know someone who is thinking about adopting a new pet for their family ask that they go to a local animal shelter instead of purchasing one from a breeder or pet store. Let them know that 25% of animals in shelters are pure-breed cats or dogs. Many times they have puppies or kittens too. Also that by adopting a cat or dog from a shelter instead of purchasing one elsewhere, they may be saving their life. Millions of cats and dogs are killed every year if they do not find a home in a certain amount of time. So adopting from a shelter gives them something that they can be proud of.
Step4
The easiest thing that you can do is to simply make a donation to the shelter. This is crucial for the animals since this is how the shelter is able to provide for the animals in its care. The more financial support they have the easier it is for them to supply all the necessities to the animals. In many cases you can chose to make donations of blankets, toys and other items that the animals may need or want. Ask you local shelter what items they are in need of if you would rather donate something besides cash, everything can be of help.
Step5
You can volunteer at a animal shelter as well. Offer any help to them that they may need, and they will be able to use it. Whiter it is washing the dogs and cats, feeding them, taking them for walks. Ask the shelter if you can volunteer and let them know when you are available. They can use all the volunteers that they can get to help take the best care of the animals. Even if you just want to go in and show the animals some love and affection. Just make sure that you check with the animal shelters staff to see what assistance they need and let them know you can help them out.
Step6
If you posses a skill such as carpentry, electrical, building things let them know. Offer to help them in that skill if they need it. It can save them money and help you to feel good about helping the animals in the living environment that they are living in. It helps the shelter by not having to pay someone else to come in and do it for them.
Step7
The easiest way to find out just how you can help your local shelter out is to call them and ask them just what they need. Each shelter may need different things so it is best to call and ask each individual one. Helping out the shelter in your area will benefit the animals who are stying there out greatly and make you feel good about helping them out as well. So thank you for caring and being interested in helping out at a shelter, not only do I thank you but the animals do as well!
