A down to earth way of patching any size plaster hole ,either in walls,or on the ceiling.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Margin trowl
  • sizeable bucket for the job being done.
  • lathing material (if hole is considerably larger than your fist).
  • Plaster trowls
  • A hawlk or a pan to hold your plaster mix
  • Gypsum based plastering materials.
  • Drop cloths and clean water
  1. Step 1

First off make sure your surface is fully cleaned out. Using your margin trowel make sure you clean out the hole until it is solid. Take a brush with some clean water and brush all around the area until saturated. Have your drop cloths down.

  2. Step 2

Next, using your margin trowl, mix up a first batch of gypsum plaster in a clean bucket of water. Mix 3 gypsum to 1 water depending on the size of the hole. Fill the hole with the mixture, going around the sides first, then into the center, using your hawk and trowel.(This is where the challenging part comes in). Make sure that you cut back below the surface to except your finish coat. Let dry for 8 to 12 hrs.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the first coat is flat and dry, and about an 1/8 " below the surface. Mix a finish coat consisting of,lime, and slow, or quick setting gauging material in a clean bucket of water, and use the guide on the bag to determine the amount to put in for the hole. (Sounds tough huh?)
Taking your hawk and trowel put mixture on the first coat until level with the original surface and smooth out.

  4. Step 4

Let it sit for awhile, then take your clean trowel and a brush with water and water trowel the surface until very smooth. Wipe off surface around hole with a sponge. There you have it! A clean patch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plastering material can burn your skin if left on too long. Always wash off with mild soap after using it. Apply moisturize afterwards. Plaster can also dry your skin.
