Step1
Select a standard IDE DVD writer of your choice.
Step2
Disconnect the power cable and any peripherals that may be attached to your computer. Pull the latch located on the back of the computer to release its side cover.
Step3
Wearing your grounding bracelet, remove the side cover, as well as the clear plastic, protective casing just beneath.
Step4
Facing the side of the computer, with the front of the unit oriented toward your left, locate the optical drive bay on the top left portion of the computer.
Step5
Open the two latches that secure the current optical drive in place.
Step6
Firmly grasp the DVD drive and slowly work it out of its fitting. Note that these drives are renowned for their tight fits, so this may take some time. Keep in mind that the data and power cables are still attached to the drive, so be sure to gently ease the drive out of place.
Step7
Disconnect the power and data cable from the rear of the DVD writer.
Step8
Remove the bottom pegs, or "feet," from the drive, as well as the aluminum bezel surrounding the front portion of the unit.
Step9
Unpack your replacement DVD writer and ensure that no contents are missing.
Step10
Attach the pegs that were just removed from the old unit to the bottom of the replacement DVD writer, as well as the aluminum bezel to the front.
Step11
Slide the new writer only partially into the optical drive bay and attach the power and data cables to the rear of the new drive.
Step12
Firmly slide the drive into place, making sure that the bottom pegs are guided into the metal lips protruding from the bottom of the bay.
Step13
Refasten the two latches that secure the drive into the bay.
Step14
Replace the clear plastic, protective cover, then the outer metal cover, to the side of the G5.
Step15
Be sure to depress the latch located on the back of the computer to secure the outer covers.
Step16
Reattach the power cable and peripherals to the computer.
Step17
Turn on the G5, and ensure that the new DVD writer is properly recognized. Test the unit to be sure that it is functioning properly.
