Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Macintosh computer with a G3 or G4 processor
- G4 upgrade processor
- Phillips screwdriver
- Needle nose pliers
- Grounding bracelet or strap
Step1
Be sure that the processor upgrade that you select is compatible with your particular model of Apple Power Mac.
Step2
Ensure that all contents that should be included within the packaging of your processor upgrade are present.
Step3
While wearing your grounding bracelet, disconnect the power cable and all attached peripherals from your computer and remove the cover of your Power Mac.
Step4
Refer to your manual in order to locate the heat sink that covers the installed processor on your computer's logic board. Its exact location will vary depending upon the model. Using needle nose pliers, detach the clips that secure the heat sink and remove it from the logic board. For certain models, you will also need to disconnect and remove the accompanying fan prior to this step by locating and removing the two associated screws from the rear of the computer itself.
Step5
Remove the screws that secure the current processor's daughtercard to the logic board. After this, gently remove the daughtercard in its entirety (including the processor) from the board.
Step6
Remove any caps, covers or other safety material from your processor upgrade.
Step7
Align the holes in the daughtercard of the new processor with the existing holes in the logic board. Gently guide the processor onto the logic board, and press firmly. Replace the screws into their respective holes.
Step8
If applicable, replace the previously removed fan to its assembly, or install the fan that was included with the processor upgrade. Refer to the proper documentation.
Step9
Replace the cover of your computer, along with its power cable and previously disconnected peripherals.
Step10
If necessary, update the operating system and/or firmware of your Power Mac--consult the relevant documentation.
Step11
Turn on the computer, ensure that your system is functioning properly and take advantage of your newly accelerated Power Mac.
