For the budding audiophile who is interested in using Digidesign's pioneering multitrack audio sequencing program, Pro Tools LE, the realization that one of the company's proprietary hardware audio interfaces is required in order to operate their industry-standard application can initially seem a bit daunting. Although users are somewhat limited in terms of options, the audio interfaces that Digidesign does provide range from relatively basic units designed for the average, perhaps slightly hesitant, consumer to elaborate, feature-laden systems intended for high-end, professional production. Within the upper echelon of these interfaces lies the Digi 002 Rack, a powerful, time-tested, rackmountable workstation that is both efficient and highly versatile, not to mention that it integrates with Pro Tools LE flawlessly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A computer running either the Windows or Macintosh operating system with at least one FireWire (IEEE 1394) port available for use
  • A Digidesign Digi 002 Rack (with included Pro Tools LE software)

Step1
After unpacking the Digidesign Digi 002 Rack, make sure that no contents are missing. Refer to the packing slip or relevant material for the specific items, which should at least include the Digi 002 Rack, one FireWire cable, reference guides, software installation CD-ROMs and an AC power cable.
Step2
Place the unit onto a flat, stable surface to avoid damage or secure the interface in a rack; (bear in mind that the Digi 002 Rack is 3.5 inches in height and will, therefore, occupy two spaces in a standard-sized rack).
Step3
Connect the AC power cable to the rear of the Digi 002 Rack and to an appropriate power source. Turn on the power to the unit (the power button is located on the left hand side of the front panel) to verify that it is functioning properly.
Step4
Insert one end of the included FireWire cable to the rear of the unit, and the other to an open FireWire port on either the front or back of your computer; (the exact location will depend upon the model).
Step5
Insert the appropriate installation CD-ROM (typically, there will be separate discs for Macintosh and Windows) and begin installing the Pro Tools LE software.
Step6
Further software configuration differs considerably depending upon your operating system. Consult Digidesign's enclosed reference material for more information.
Step7
Once the installation process is complete, you may begin connecting your available audio, MIDI and peripheral devices, and begin recording.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pro Tools LE is an extremely robust and extensive audio application. As such, it is recommended that users set aside a fair amount of time and patience to learn the intricacies of the program; read the user guides and all reference material thoroughly.
