Things You'll Need:
- Patience
- Time for research
- Cool, dark storage for oils
-
Step 1
Determine which oils you need before you begin shopping for them. A basic care kit often includes such oils as: lavender, tea tree, peppermint, chamomile, eucalyptus, geranium, rosemary, thyme, lemon and clove.
-
Step 2
Research these oils to get an idea of the prices and their healing qualities (see Resources below).
-
Step 3
Shop only in places concerned with natural healing, organic foods and related items. These are more likely to have pure essential oils from high quality suppliers.
-
Step 4
Avoid anything listed as a nature identical, reconstitution, aroma, compound or isolate. These are mixed with other oils, carrier oils or sometimes inorganic ingredients. Unfortunately, the law does not prevent companies from selling these blends under the term "essential oils," so it is still very important to shop from reliable sources with reputations for pure oil and high quality.
-
Step 5
Consider the prices of oils as you shop. As your research will show, some oils, such as chamomile or lemon balm, will cost more than the more easily obtained eucalyptus or lavender. If your shop offers all oils at or near the same low price, it's highly unlikely that they are actually pure oils.
