How to Apply a Beeswax Finish

Beeswax wood finishes are both durable and relatively easy to apply. Store-bought beeswax finishes generally come in a paste wax form. Homemade finishes are more like the consistency of honey. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Beeswax Finish
  • Bare wood project
  • Paintbrush
  • Soft cloth

Step1
Decide if you are going to purchase your beeswax finish from the store or are going to make it yourself. Either is fine.
Step2
Follow the directions on the can of store-bought beeswax finish. Since this is a simple finish, few additional materials should be needed.
Step3
Dip a clean paintbrush into a homemade beeswax finish. Allow excess to drain off.
Step4
Paint the finish onto the wood, just as if it were a thick layer of paint.
Step5
Allow the finish to remain on the wood for 30 minutes.
Step6
Use a section of clean, soft cloth to wipe any remaining finish from the wood. Buff using the cloth and following the grain. This will help the finish soak deep into the wood.
Step7
Reapply as many coats as desired, waiting at least 24 hours between coats.

Tips & Warnings

  • A beeswax finish is one of the most water-resistant, old-fashioned finishes.
  • Buffed between coats, a beeswax finish can achieve a glossy look.
  • To clean, wipe with a damp cloth.
  • Reapply the finish anytime the wood begins to look dull.
  • You can make a beeswax finish at home by mixing 1 part shaved beeswax, 2 parts turpentine. Let it sit overnight. Add 1 part Tung or boiled linseed oil and mix thoroughly.
