Wine can be made with almost any fruit or vegetable. A truly unique homemade wine can be made using flavored tea bags. It is not a full bodied wine; but tea wine is a light wine similar to a wine cooler. Read on to learn how to make it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Container for the wine (3 to 5 gallon works best)
  • Airlock
  • Filtered or bottled water
  • Sugar
  • Wine Yeast
  • Flavored Tea
  1. Step 1

Choose a container that will hold 3 to 5 gallons of liquid. Make sure it can be closed with either a commercial or homemade airlock.

  2. Step 2

Begin filling the container with water. Leave air space at the top that equals the final gallon.

  3. Step 3

Add the sugar at a ratio of 1 lb. sugar to 1 gallon of water. Stir or shake to mix until the sugar is dissolved.

  4. Step 4

Proof the yeast by adding 1 packet of wine yeast to 1/4 cup of water and 1 tablespoon sugar. Stir to mix and let rise.

  5. Step 5

Add the proofed yeast to the sugar water and stir to mix.

  6. Step 6

Add 3 flavored tea bags for every gallon of sugar water.

  7. Step 7

Attach the airlock and put the mix in a safe place to allow it to work. Watch the airlock and when the mixture stops bubbling the wine is ready.

  8. Step 8

Decant into smaller bottles, chill and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read the tea ingredients, those that contain Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) will sometimes kill the yeast.
  • Depending on the ambient temperature of the room that the wine works in, the wine could be ready in as little as 2 weeks.
  • The 5 gallon jugs of bottled water from the super center work well for doing this method of wine making.
  • Don’t expect a brew that a true wine connoisseur will love. This is just a simple method for a simple wine.

on 11/25/2009 I was trying to make some tea wine at home, while putting in the teabags, i realized there are staples on the teabags. I have concerns of metals affecting the brew making it poisonous but i dump it in anw. Jus wondering anyone did the same thing as i do but manage to brew a drinkable wine?

on 9/3/2008 Holy cow! I have been making home made wine for years, beer also. My Italian grandfather made his own wine too and I've never heard of tea wine. I'll definitely try it. Thanks
