Looking for a way to encourage fathers and daughters to spend some time together? Why not organize a Father/Daughter Square Dance?

Square Dances are fun because you don't have to know anything-except your left from your right. It is a new experience for a father and a daughter to share together. Plus girls of all ages and dads of all ages can have fun, from kindergarten through 75 years old.

The Father/Daughter Square Dance has become an annual event with our Girl Scout Service Unit. So many girls and dads want to come that three separate square dances are held to accommodate all the couples. This could also be a great school event for a PTA, church fellowships, or community centers to organize.

Read on to learn more about how to organize a father/daughter square dance for your community.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a date and time. March is a good time because there's not as much happening as when spring sports season kicks into high gear.

  2. Step 2

Hire a Caller. This is the DJ of the Square Dance and the person that chooses the music and dances, and calls (sings the instructions) for the dance.

  3. Step 3

Find a location big enough to hold all the couples. There needs to be room for four couples to face one another and move in a circle without bumping into another group of dancers or other obstacles. A school gym or community center makes an excellent site.

  4. Step 4

Advertise the event. If you can convince the girls this is something they really want to do, it's hard for a father to say no to this request of his daughter.

  5. Step 5

Limit tickets to the amount of space in the room and the number of people the Caller is comfortable having at the dance. Around 12 or 13 squares (4 couples in a square) are usually manageable.

  6. Step 6

Provide drinks such as juice and water. Refreshments such as chips, pretzels, and cookies are enough for the event.

  7. Step 7

Limit the number of women that are allowed at the Father/Daughter Square Dance to not more than two, one to collect tickets and one to organize the refreshments. If at all possible, try to get some dads to take on these responsibilities. In doing this the Dads are more comfortable and have an easier time getting "silly" and "cutting loose" with their daughters if there's no one watching!

  8. Step 8

Once everyone has arrived at the Square Dance, turn the event over to the Caller. He will get everyone organized and dancing in no time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a couple extra "Dads" on standby in case there is a daughter that wants to attend, but doesn't have a dad to take.
  • The Yellow Pages and Internet searches are ways to find Callers in your area. Local Granges are another source of information.
  • Be strict about the "No Moms" policy. It really ruins the fun for fathers and daughters if there's someone watching and giggling on the sidelines.
