Every little bit of storage helps. Why not build your own straightback storage chairs? They're quick and easy and look surprisingly good.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • (1) 4 foot x 8 foot sheet of plywood
  • (3) 10 foot long 2x4s
  • Hinges
  • Edgebanding/glue
  • Jigsaw
  • Pocket screw jig
  • Tape measure
  • Wood screws
  • Circular or table saw
  • Drill
  • Wood filler
  • Paint or stain
  • Sander
  1. Step 1

Make these cuts from the 2x4s:
    2 pieces @ 30 inches
    2 pieces @ 16 inches
    2 pieces @ 13 inches
    2 pieces @ 10 inches

  2. Step 2

    Make these cuts from the plywood;
    1 piece @ 16 inches x 16 inches
    1 piece @ 16 inches x 13 inches
    1 piece @ 16 inches x 3 1/2 inches
    2 pieces @ 3 inches x 10 inches

  3. Step 3

    Sand all surfaces.

  4. Step 4

Build the frame. Lay the (2) 30 inch 2x4 pieces on their 30 inch long, 3 1/2 inch wide faces. Measure up 16 inches from their bottoms and draw a line. Span the two pieces with a 10 inch piece making an "H" with the top of the 10 inch piece flush with the line you drew.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the step above using the (2) 16 inch pieces and another 10 inch piece (this time it resembles an upside down and squared off "U"). Make sure the 10 inch piece is flush with the tops of the 16 inch pieces.

  6. Step 6

Lay the "U" on top of the "H". When the bottoms of the 16 and 30 inch pieces are lined up the 10 inch pieces should be lined up as well.

  7. Step 7

Span the "U" and the "H" with the 13 inch 2x4 pieces making certain that they are flush with the tops of the 16 inch pieces and even with the 10 inch pieces.

  8. Step 8

Now for the fun part. Using the jigsaw, cut out the corners of the 16 inch x 16 inch piece of plywood so that it fits snugly between the 16 inch and 30 inch 2x4s and rests underneath the 10 inch and 13 inch 2x4s. This will be the bottom of your storage area. Attach.

  9. Step 9

Cut out 2 corners of the 16 inch x 3 1/2 inch piece of plywood so that it fits snugly between the 30 inch 2x4s and sits flush on top of the back 10 inch 2x4 and the backs of the 13 inch 2x4s. Attach.

  10. Step 10

Lay the 16 inch x 13 1/2 inch piece of plywood on top of the 2x4s (it's the seat) and flush against the 16 inch x 3 1/2 inch piece of plywood. Attach the 16 inch x 13 1/2 inch plywood to the 3 1/2 inch plywood using your hinges. DO NOT ATTACH IT TO THE 2X4S. Note: the front of the 16 x 13 1/2 inch piece of plywood will hang over the front of the frame by 1/2 inch.

  11. Step 11

Span between the 30 inch 2x4s with the remaining 2 pieces of plywood. Attach using pocket screws. One piece should be near the tops of the 30 inch pieces and the other 6 to 8 inches lower.

  12. Step 12

Apply edgebanding to all exposed edges of the plywood.

  13. Step 13

Fill in all holes with wood filler. Sand smooth.

  14. Step 14

Paint or stain to your liking. Finishe with a couple coats of lacquer.

Tips & Warnings
  • You could attach a cushion if you're feeling ambitious.
  • Never paint or stain without proper ventilation.
