How to build a 2x4 bookshelf

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

• (8) 10 foot long 2x4s
• tape measure
• circular or hand saw
• wood screws
• drill
• wood filler
• sander
• paint or stain and/or lacquer

1. Make these cuts:
   4 pieces @ 59 7/8 inches (cut (2) 2x4s in half)
   22 pieces @ 24 inches
   12 pieces @ 6 inches
2. Sand all surfaces.
3. Build the back. Lay (2) 59 7/8 inch pieces on their 1 1/2 inch faces roughly 24 inches apart. Span the top with a 24 inch piece lying on it's 3 1/2 inch face. Attach a second 24 inch piece 1 inch above the bottom. Equally space 4 more 24 inch pieces and attach.
4. Build the front. Lay the other (2) 59 7/8 inch pieces on top of the back flush with the top and the bottom. Span the bottoms of these new pieces with a 24 inch piece. Instead of attaching it the same way, lay this 24 inch piece on it's 1 1/2 inch face and line it up so that when it is attached it will be flush with the bottom of the back 24 inch piece making an "L" shape. Repeat all the way up. However, with the top 24 inch piece go ahead and make it flush with the top.
5. Attach the front to the back. Using the 6 inch pieces, flush out the frame. Attach them so that they match up with the BACK 24 inch pieces (making an "L" shape with the sides of the front pieces).
6. Using the remaining 24 inch pieces, build the shelves. They should match up with the front 24 inch pieces.
7. Fill in all holes with wood filler and spot sand smooth.
8. Paint or stain to your liking. Finishing with a couple of coats of lacquer.
