A shelving unit can be cumbersome and rigid, whereas box shelves are flexible and fun. Here's how to make your own out of one sheet of plywood.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • (1) 4x8 sheet of finished plywood
  • Velcro
  • wood screws
  • Circular or table saw
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • Paint or stain
  1. Step 1

    Make these cuts:
    16 pieces @ 11 3/4 inches x 11 3/4 inches
    16 pieces @ 11 3/4 inches x 10 1/4 inches
    8 pieces @ 1 inch x 10 1/4 inches

  2. Step 2

Sand all surfaces (using prefinished plywood makes this step a heck of a lot easier).

  3. Step 3

Paint or stain one side of each piece (the inside will be hard to paint once the boxes are put together).

  4. Step 4

    Build the boxes. Combine (2) 11 3/4 inch x 11 3/4 inch pieces and (2) 11 3/4 inch x 10 1/4 inch pieces to make a 11 3/4 inch cube. Attach a 1 inch x 10 1/4 inch piece at the back of the box. Repeat seven times.

  5. Step 5

Fill in all holes with wood filler. Sand smooth.

  6. Step 6

Paint or stain the outside of the boxes.

  7. Step 7

Attach velcro to the tops and bottoms of the boxes so that they will be held together.

  8. Step 8

Arrange the boxes to your liking. Make sure you keep the 1 inch strip at the back to prevent items from falling through.

Tips & Warnings
  • You could build backs to the boxes but it would net fewer boxes from each sheet of plywood.
  • Never paint or stain without proper ventilation.
