Gourds have been used for bowls and baskets for hundreds of years. For many, they were a necessity; for some, a beautifully painted gourd bowl was a work of art. Today, the gourd bowl is somewhat of a novelty. Still, it can be a work of art if it is skillfully decorated and preserved properly. Even in its natural state, a gourd bowl is beautiful. It can be used to store many different items. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large basket gourd (also known as basketball gourd)
  • Pencil
  • Drill with 1/4 inch bit
  • Small jigsaw or handheld rotary tool with saw attachment
  • Varnish or spray on sealant
  1. Step 1

Scrub the gourd with water and a plastic mesh scrubber to remove any mold and dirt from the gourd. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Determine how large you want your bowl and draw a line around the diameter. You can get two bowls by cutting at the approximate center of the gourd.

  3. Step 3

Drill a hole--or series of holes--centered anywhere on the penciled line. Do this so you can insert the blade of the jigsaw or rotary tool without ripping the gourd.

  4. Step 4

Use the jigsaw or rotary tool to cut the gourd. Follow the penciled line around the diameter.

  5. Step 5

Fill the gourd with warm water. Let it sit a few hours or over night. Then, using a spoon or scoop, scrape out any softened matter from the inside of the gourd. Continue scraping until the sides are smooth. Let it dry.

  6. Step 6

Apply varnish to both the inside and outside of the bowl. When it is dry to the touch, apply a second coat. Once that is dry, the gourd bowl is ready for use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Gourd bowls can be used for almost anything from cut flowers to wrapped candies.
  • If desired, decorate your bowl by woodburning or painting before applying the varnish.
  • A properly finished gourd bowl will last for years.
  • Basket gourds can be purchased at most hobby shops. If you have the space, you can grow them yourself.
  • Gourd bowls that have been varnished inside should not be used to contain open foods. Always line the bowl completely with foil or plastic wrap before using to serve food.
