Those U-shaped slips look a lot bigger when you're standing on the dock. Steer your boat toward one, though; and it feels like you're trying to thread a needle with piece of clothesline. Don't worry. It's really very easy to dock your boat in a slip. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Boat
  • Helper
  1. Step 1

Put your fenders out. They will protect the sides of your boat if you get against the dock.

  2. Step 2

Check the wind and the current or tide. Steer into the wind.

  3. Step 3

Carry enough speed that you don't drift when you first start into the slip. Don't go so fast that you crash into the end of the slip.

  4. Step 4

As you approach, instruct your helper to jump on the dock on the upwind side of the boat, carrying a rope attached to the boat. The helper should hang on to the boat to prevent it from bumping the dock.

  5. Step 5

When the boat is in the slip, begin to tie up. Tie the upwind lines first, beginning with the bow line. When possible, tie your boat on all four corners. Leave a little slack in the line so your lines won't snap in a strong wind.
