Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Restaurants tend to treat people with reservations better than people who simply come in unannounced; so make a reservation a few days in advance. Then on the appointed day, call the restaurant to confirm your reservation and tell them your preference of a table.
Step2
If it's a special occasion and you are visiting a restaurant for the first time, stop by earlier in the day to introduce yourself to the maitre d'. Tell him your name as well as the name of your guest or guests. Tell him how much you look forward to your experience. You will be rewarded by more attention and better service.
Step3
Pay your bill in advance. This will be welcomed by a restaurant, no matter how often you go. To insure the best service, tell them to add a substantial tip to the total. In most cases, your server will know what you have done and will treat you accordingly.
Step4
Tip the maitre d' as he takes you to your table. That may result in your being seated at a table that is better than the one he originally had in mind. Also, if you intend to return to that restaurant, the maitre d' will remember your generosity and will act as a result.
