Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Define your work hours precisely: "I will be at my desk/work bench/greenhouse between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m." While "work when you want" sounds great, it might not be practical, especially if you work with customers or have a problem with self-discipline.
Step2
Get caller ID on your phone and resist the urge to take (and make) personal calls on your business time. You need to leave the line open for clients anyway.
Step3
Use a day planner to plan your day and track your progress. It can help to write estimated revenues next to each task so you can see how time on task translates to money.
Step4
Eliminate distractions. If that cranked up music has you singing and dancing instead of working, turn it down.
Step5
Give yourself a break. In fact, give yourself 3 or 4 breaks during your work day. You need to stand up (or maybe sit down), stretch and clear your mind. Take a quick walk. Do some calisthenics. Get the blood flowing. Then get back to work.
Step6
Discipline yourself. If you step into the kitchen for a cup of coffee, get your coffee and get back to work. Do not do the dishes; do not bake a cake; do not fix the leaking faucet. You can handle those tasks after work hours.
