If you're traveling to China and want to immerse yourself in the Chinese dining experience, take these steps to enhance your cultural appreciation with food!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An open mind
  • An ability to evaluate how well something is being cooked
  • Pepto Bismol chewable tablets
  1. Step 1

Traveling to China is a major excursion. You've got to plan ahead for something like this. In your pre-trip plans, begin preparing yourself for eating the local cuisine by chewing one tablet of Pepto Bismol each day, beginning a week before you arrive in China.

  2. Step 2

When you arrive, continue your regimen of one tablet a day.

  3. Step 3

As you are out walking around, pay attention to the food vendors on the street and in the markets. See what foods look interesting to you, that you might want to try. There is an extensive variety of good food to be had. Notice also how well the vendors cook their food. If there is any doubt that something is thoroughly cooked, either find someone else who is making the same kind of thing, or look for something else to eat.

  4. Step 4

Pick something that looks interesting or adventurous or familiar, whatever you're in the mood for. If you're paying attention and even a little bit careful, you'll be able to find vendors making something healthy, inexpensive, and authentically Chinese!

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a different world in China. Don't expect everything to be pristine clean, but watch carefully to see that the vendor is doing a safe job of thoroughly cooking the food. Watching them cook is part of the entertainment!
  • Nearly all the food is very inexpensive.
  • Know your own gastronomic limits. If it isn't for you, you don't have to eat it. The Pepto Bismol tablets will help you with some with foods out of your normal range of culinary adventure, but if the thought of swallowing "That!!!" makes you queasy, then you're not having a good time. Remember, you should be enjoying yourself! Find a restaurant more suited to your tastes and you'll have a better experience.
