Backyard bird feeder

Summer is coming again soon and what better way to welcome your feathered friends than with a bird feeder? Recycle a one-liter plastic bottle into a backyard bird feeder that is fun to make and functional too.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • A clean, one-liter plastic beverage bottle (pop)
  • A paper punch
  • Sunflower seeds
  • A piece of paper
  • A wooden dowel
  • String
  1. Step 1

Remove the label from the one-liter bottle and make sure it is washed and dry. Don't throw away the screw on cap!

  2. Step 2

Cut out squares on opposite sides of the bottle (toward the bottom) using scissors. An adult will need to do this step.

  3. Step 3

Using a paper punch, put a hole just below each cut out square.

  4. Step 4

Push a small wooden dowel through the holes. The dowel will serve as the birds' perch on your bird feeder.

  5. Step 5

Take your piece of paper and roll it into a cone shape. Place the small end into the top of the bird feeder and fill the bottle with the sunflower seeds. Remove the paper and screw on the cap.

  6. Step 6

Tie the string around the lip of the bottle and just below the cap. Tie several knots in the string to prevent it from slipping off of the bottle.

  7. Step 7

Choose a tree that you can see easily and often from a window. Tie the feeder to a small tree branch.

  8. Step 8

Now comes the best part - enjoy watching your beautiful feathered friends flock to their new backyard bird feeder!

Tips & Warnings
  • Vary the type of bird feed you put into the feeder and take note of which birds come to visit.

You are not a moron! I am the type of person who learns best with hands-on experience or by seeing something done. Pictures are worth a thousand words! :)
