How to Find Free Livestock

With feed costs rising every week, many livestock owners are looking to either cut back or get out of animal husbandry altogether. Also, often people will get rabbits or goats as a novelty, and when the uniqueness wears off, they look for ways to get rid of the animals. For those looking for small animals--whether for meat, dairy or eggs--finding these animals can be simple if you know where to look.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet access

Step1
Search the classifieds in your local newspapers. Look for ads that state something to the effect of "must find a new home" or "cannot keep." Wait 2 weeks, then call the number. If they haven’t been able to sell the animal, they may be willing to give it away.
Step2
Place an ad in the local free papers offering a home for livestock animals.
Step3
Jump online and search the Craigslist ads for your location. Many people list their giveaways there instead of paying for print classifieds.
Step4
Post an ad on your local Freecycle group.
Step5
Do a search for homesteading forums or discussion groups. Many of these have a barter board where animals are placed for giveaway. Be sure to ask for pictures of the animal and find out about age and health before agreeing to take an animal you haven’t seen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bred animals are usually the best to get, if you can find them. In a short time you will have more than one.
  • Many people will trade and barter animals to improve their flocks or herds. If you already have an excess of a certain breed, be sure to mention that to anyone you talk to about other livestock.
  • Pay close attention to the animal’s personality. Many people will try to pass off aggressive or otherwise unsuitable animals on eager newbies.
  • Don’t take an unhealthy looking animal just because you feel sorry for it. Often the vet bills will cost more than the animal is worth.
