Step 1
For a week make an effort to arrive at the subway station at slightly different times. Ten minutes earlier can make all the difference in the volume of people. At the end of the week, select which time seems the lightest and still gets you to work relatively on time.
-
Step 2
Avoid bringing too many things with you on the subway. A cup of coffee is fine, but a cup of coffee and a paper can be too much of a challenge to hold, creating added stress.
-
Step 3
It's very easy to get annoyed at other people when you are crammed in with them. The best way to counteract this is to be very aware of how much space you yourself are taking up and be as considerate to those around you as you can. This will ultimately put you in control for space.
-
Step 4
If you are being hit by a newspaper or someone's bag, instead of suffering quietly and getting angry, say "excuse me" politely and draw the person's attention to it.
-
Step 5
Always remember to breathe deeply in and out of your nose to keep you calm even when you begin to get annoyed at your fellow passengers.
-
Step 6
If you begin to experience extreme anger or claustrophobia, exit the train at its next stop and take a moment to calm yourself. It's better to arrive a little late than to arrive upset.
