Step 1
Research the prices of competing caterers. Before attempting a negotiation, make sure you have consulted with other caterers in your area regarding their prices, packages and availability.
-
Step 2
Does your wedding date fall on a day of the week or time of year when the caterer may have an emptier schedule? Ask the caterer how booking his service during the off-season may affect his price.
-
Step 3
What exactly is included in the catering package? Ask the caterer to itemize the package price for you, so you know exactly what is included. There may be items included in a package that you and your guests can do without. Ask the caterer if the package can be modified to meet your budget.
-
Step 4
What are the hidden costs? A caterer may be tacking on charges for gasoline, unopened bottles of alcohol, extra gratuity or additional staff that you don't need. Make sure to question every part of the package price, and point out items that you don't think you should have to pay for.
-
Step 5
Can you provide your own alcohol? Ask the caterer what you can save by bringing in your own liquor, wine and beer.
-
Step 6
Remember, cash talks. Ask the caterer how it will affect the cost if you pay the fee, or portion of the fee, in cash. Always be sure to get a contract and a receipt when choosing this option.
