You tried to be careful when you were painting the wall, but some paint got splashed on your ceramic tile floor. Now what? If the paint is wet, it can be wiped up with a damp sponge. But if it’s dried, you’ll need a couple of different techniques to remove the paint from the tile and the grout.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Putty knife
  • Scouring pad
  • Warm, soapy water
  • Grout removal tool
  • New grout
  • Grout float
  • Wet sponge
  • Safety glasses
  1. Step 1

Apply a putty knife. If there are drops of dried paint on the tile itself, you can take care of it with a putty knife. Angle the knife so that you can get leverage and then apply gentle pressure at the edge of the splatter until the paint comes up.

  2. Step 2

Use a scouring pad for grout. Using warm, soapy water and a scouring pad or a sponge with an abrasive side, gently scrub at the grout until the paint stain is gone.

  3. Step 3

Remove the grout if necessary. If the scouring pad doesn’t fix the grout, you have no choice but to re-grout. Using a group removal tool, scrape out the paint-stained grout.

  4. Step 4

Clean the area. Removing grout is a messy process, so make sure the area is clean before re-grouting.

  5. Step 5

Apply new grout. After mixing up a batch of new grout, apply it to the hole with a float (a tool made for the job) and then wipe away excess.

  6. Step 6

Clean again. When the grout has set for 15 to 20 minutes, use a wet sponge to clean the area.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you must remove the old grout, make sure to wear safety glasses while you work.
  • When using a grout removal tool, be very careful. If it slips while you’re working, it can cause damage to the surrounding tiles. For an alternative way to remove grout, use a hammer and chisel (or flat-head screwdriver).
