How to Enjoy Jazz in New Orleans

New Orleans has always been an epicenter for jazz, and even Hurricane Katrina hasn't be able to mitigate the city's love for its music. It is more important than ever to visit this city, not only to help bolster its economy and spirit, but also to enjoy its legendary music.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Go beyond Bourbon Street. While there is nothing quite like spending time on this famed street, it's primarily geared toward (drunk) tourists, and it's not the best place for the true music aficionado. A good alternative is Frenchman Street, which is located on the outskirts of the quarter. Frenchman Street offers several fine jazz establishments, from hole-in-the-wall bars to larger venues.
Step2
Visit Preservation Hall. Home of the famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Preservation Hall itself is a historical wonder (the building has been standing since 1750). At Preservation Hall, you will hear traditional New Orleans Jazz played by luminaries in the genre.
Step3
Take advantage of all the street musicians. The saying "the best things in life are free" certainly holds true for listening to jazz in New Orleans, where street musicians abound. One great place to catch street musicians is in front of the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square.
Step4
Attend the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. One of the largest music events in the country, "Jazz Fest," as it is known in New Orleans, brings legendary musicians to the city for two weekends of music. If you can't attend this event (or dislike such large crowds), the city offers other music festivals (although these are not jazz specific) like Voodoo Fest in October and French Quarter Fest in early April.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even if you cannot visit New Orleans, you can help ensure the future vitality of its music. See the links below for information about music support programs.
