In order to start a homeschool in Kentucky, you must qualify your homeschool as if it is a private school. This qualification is possible by simply completing the required paperwork.

The parent that is in charge of homeschooling the children does not need to meet any special criteria to teach. This is because the Kentucky courts have decided that a teaching certificate is great, but it does not necessarily mean that a person without a certificate is not capable of providing appropriate education for a child.

A letter must be submitted to the local board of education to notify them of the students that will be attending the homeschool. This letter must be submitted within two weeks of the beginning of the school year.

An attendance ledger must also be maintained. This record will help to insure that the required 175 six-hour instructional days of schooling will be accomplished. Scholarship reports must also be maintained.

In Kentucky, compulsory school attendance starts at the age of six, so kindergarten in a homeschool environment is optional. All required paperwork would begin at six years of age when school attendance becomes mandatory.

Kentucky courts have ruled that the only legal way the Department of Education has of checking on the educational progress of children involved in a homeschool is by looking at standardized test results. This decision came because of the constitutions Fourth Amendment.

Ultimately, a visit could be made by the Department of Education with the consent of an adult resident or the issue of a legal warrant. Up to this point in time, the Kentucky legislature has not instigated a state wide required standardized testing program, thus currently there are no testing requirements for homeschooled children.

Homeschooled students do need to make sure that they are educated in spelling, grammar, writing, reading, civics, history and mathematics. The textbooks that are used in your homeschool are entirely up to you. It is not necessary to use the same texts that are used within the public school system.
