Things You'll Need:

  • Notice of Intent (optional)
  1. Step 1

Connecticut has only one option for homeschooling, and that is the traditional form of a homeschool. With this option of establishing and operating a personal homeschool, there are no special qualifications that a parent must meet. Having a high school diploma is sufficient enough qualification to teach your child at home.

  2. Step 2

Connecticut does not specifically require any paperwork to be filed in order to start a homeschool. The state does ask parents to voluntarily file a Notice of Intent form. If the parent chooses to voluntarily comply with this request, then this form needs to be filed with the local school superintendent within 10 days of the start of the particular homeschool. This written letter of intent should indicate who the teacher will be, the number of instruction days expected, what subjects will be taught, and what assessment methods will be used by the teacher.

  3. Step 3

Parents are also asked to collect a portfolio of student work that can exhibit that required courses have be taught. It is the local school district that will annually request to see this portfolio so that proof can be acquired that the particular child really is receiving adequate instruction.

  4. Step 4

Connecticut does require children as young as five to attend school. Parents can sign an option form with the local school district to allow a child to not start attending school until they are seven. Keeping this in mind, parents that homeschool can choose to keep the requested paperwork on their kindergarten aged child.
