Things You'll Need:
- Notice of Intent
-
Step 1
Nevada law allows for a child attend homeschool. There are no specific parent qualifications that must be met for a parent to school their child at home.
-
Step 2
A notice of intent to homeschool must be submitted to the superintendent of the local school district. This form must be filed before homeschooling begins, or within 10 days of the child being withdrawn from the public school, or within 30 days of a family establishing residency. Upon the event that the address of the parent or child changes, then a new notice must be sent to the superintendent within 30 days. The intent of this letter is to simply notify the local school that the child involved is exempt from compulsory public school attendance.
-
Step 3
Included in the notice must be the name, age and gender of the child, the name and address of the parent that is filing the notice, a signed indication that the parent is assuming full educational responsibility for the child, the name of the last public school in Nevada that the child attended, and an appropriate educational plan for the child.
-
Step 4
Compulsory school attendance begins at age seven, thus there are no kindergarten homeschool requirements in Nevada.
-
Step 5
Homeschooled children are not required to take part in any particular testing, but the local public school is responsible to allow any homeschool children to voluntarily participate in any testing opportunities. Such testing would include college entrance exams like the SAT and the ACT as well as the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship qualifying test.
-
Step 6
Throughout the course of a child’s education, reading, composition and writing, science, history, geography, government, economics and mathematics must all be taught. This does not mean that every one of these subjects must be taught every single school year. It is up to the parent’s discretion as to what is appropriate at what age and grade level for each particular child involved.
