How to Choose a 4-H Sewing Project
Having the opportunity to make your own clothes can be very rewarding, and 4-H provides a perfect opportunity for you to learn how. Chances are you will be making an item of clothing that you can wear in a 4-H fashion or be judged and critiqued at the county fair. In order to do well it is important that you choose an appropriate project based on your age and your skills. Here's how to choose a 4-H sewing project.

First it important to consider what you can make that you want to wear. Many 4-Hers choose to sew clothes that they can wear on a daily basis such as shirts, slacks or nice dresses. Others opt to make clothes for a special occasion such as prom.

After you have determined what you want to make it is important that you set a budget. You'll need to find fabric, thread, patterns and any accessories you need all for the amount you have set aside. This is very important since you have to keep track of your expenses related to your project in your 4-H record book.

Once you have a budget you can make your first purchase which should be a pattern. You can visit local fabric stores and search through their pattern books until you find a piece of clothing similar to what you want to make.

The next step is to then purchase the fabric. This is often one of the best parts of a 4-H sewing project since there are such an abundance of fabrics available for you to buy. Since fabrics differ based on the materials they are created from it is important that you find a type of fabric that is easy for you to work with. If you are just beginning to learn how to sew you should use a cotton/polyester blend unless making a special piece.
