So the wind blew over the tree and you had to cut it all up and take it to the recycling station. OK, can we make this chore a little easier? Yes we can! When we get to the dump, we can have that load off the truck so fast, it will seem like fun to take the trip; except for when you get to the gate and have to pay!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Old rope to make the sled
  • long good rope to tie off the load to a stationary object
  • An adjustable tie-down strap to release the tension

Step1
Manufacture a sled of dump material Make a "load sled": So you have some form of mess that has to go to the dump or transfer station. B 4 U load the truck, make a load sled. Use a length of old, yet fair rope, about 10 feet or so to fashion the sled. Use some of the debris. In this case I inter twined a few stout branches through a few long branches. Notice I laid them in a way that would slide out of the truck easily. Be careful that nothing will snag the sides of your truck when the load is going out.
Step2
Just right with the rope ready to hook up at the dump Place the sled in the bed: Place it in a position that will carry the load and yank everything, without simply pulling through. Leave enough rope to make the hook-up at the dump.
Step3
Load your truck: Start 'building' the load in a way that will encourage an easy 'dump'. Be careful to keep the load from becoming snagged in your lumber rack, or wheel wells, or the like. Put it in, to slide out.
Step4
A good anchor for the pull Head to the dump: You have your load secure, and there is no way you are going to get a ticket for garbage flying out of your vehicle, right? OK, when you get to the dump,(and pay; really, if your trash is anything like mine, they ought to pay us for the treasure.)Anyway, find a location in the dumping location, that has a good hook-up for the pull. Look around, there might be a steel ring, like the one i used, or something really heavy already dumped by someone else.
Step5
Off in a second Unloading the truck: Take a good look around. MAKE SURE it is safe to proceed. have a spotter go with you. Make the tie-up with the tie down strap, and the long rope if you need it. Take the slack out of the line, and check the load and the path of direction one more time. Hit the gas and jerk that stuff out of your truck so fast, it will make you giddy.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's best to do this in a less crowded area, even if you have to wait
  • Try to make the load as slick as possible.
  • The dump is a great place to talk trash
  • "What's a nice girl like you, doing in a dump like this!" etc.
  • Some cities give a discount, so use your 'city buddy's', truck
  • Don't over load
  • Don't try this with masonry or rubble- too heavy and coarse
  • Don't run over anyone
  • some dumps frown on dumpster diving
  • make sure your load is secure and tarped, if need

on 2/13/2008 I used to live in the country and we saved up milk cartons for a month because it was a long way to the dump. Phew that got pretty bad even with rinsing them out. We had to keep that stuff in the basement to keep the "critters" from tearing it up, too. Ahhhhhhhhhhh - the good old days!

on 2/12/2008 "What's a nice girl like you, doing in a dump like this!"

Nobody's ever said that to me, although one guy did take my garbage for me and called my girly ... lol .. There is no cost for our dump if you live in the county. Good thing, cause there isn't garbage service where I live!
