Remove Refrigerator Odors

We all know that baking soda is a great way to eliminate odors from the refrigerator. You can either choose the original box and open the top or they have special ones these days that actually stick to the inside of your refrigerator.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

It is called the ARM & HAMMER FRIDGE FRESH Refrigerator Air Filter. It even has a replacement indicator on it so you know when to change it. I love this option because it does not get in the way with my food since it sticks to the side.

  2. Step 2

Another thing that we all should do from time to time is remove everything from our refrigerator and clean the whole thing the right way. Go through all of your food and dispose of bad items. Clean each component of your refrigerator with a household cleaner or you can mix equal amounts of bleach and water together. Make sure that you clean it thoroughly! That should eliminate any odors. Allow your refrigerator a little time to be left open and air out.

  3. Step 3

Another simple trick that I do from time to time is simply cut a lemon or other citrus fruit in half and place it inside on a shelf. It helps to absorb odors and leaves your refrigerator smelling fresh.

You can also get a shallow pan or tray and place a small amount of either cat litter, activated charcoal or coffee grounds inside to have it catch Odor's for you.

  4. Step 4

Vanilla also does wonders. You can place some imitation vanilla (since it is cheaper then the real stuff) inside.

  5. Step 5

The most important thing no matter how gross it may be, is to check where that smell is coming from. What is lurking in your refrigerator that is giving off that smell? You really need to keep your refrigerator clean since it is where you store all the foods that you eat. When you go shopping make it a routine to check what you already have and clean it up before you place new food inside.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean your refrigerator often and toss any old food as soon as possible
  • Leave leftovers in sealed container

on 7/24/2008 I had the worst refrigerator odor coming from a combination of cheese, onions and chinese food. Pretty bad. After trying just about everything else including baking soda which didn't really work well, I saw a recommendation about a product called Fridge-IT. It is a little purple activated carbon odor absorber. Might be little but wow, does it work great. I highly recommend it.
