Things You'll Need:

  • Affidavit
  1. Step 1

Two viable options exist that allow individuals to run a homeschool in Utah. The first option is to file a homeschool affidavit with the local school district. The second option allows a group of homeschool is to collectively become a private school. For either option, there are no requirements placed on the individual that is offering the instruction to the children.

  2. Step 2

For the affidavit option, a separate affidavit must be submitted to the local school district for every child that is involved. This affidavit waives the child’s requirements to attend a public school without being considered truant. A statement must be included that ensures that the required subjects will be taught, and the required instruction time will be followed. Educational records do not necessarily need to be maintained since it is against the law for the local school district to request to see such documents.

  3. Step 3

For the group of homeschoolers option, no paperwork can be required except for maybe a business license since legally this group is an entire private school entity.

  4. Step 4

There are no kindergarten home school requirements in Utah since compulsory attendance begins in first grade at the age of six-years-old.

  5. Step 5

Standardized testing cannot be required by homeschools in any form according to Utah statutes.

Grades nine through 12 must be taught social studies, math, science, reading and language arts, library media skills, general financial literacy, career and technical education, health education, physical education, the arts and educational technology.
