The Reference Monitor is a handy tool in Adobe Premiere Pro. It acts as a second Program Monitor, and can be used to compare different frames of the same sequence, or to view the same clip in different modes simultaneously.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To open a Reference Monitor, go to the Program Monitor menu by clicking on the arrow in its upper-most right corner. Choose "New Reference Monitor," and it will open in a separate panel.

  2. Step 2

Cue the frame of a sequence displayed in the Reference Monitor independently from the Program Monitor for side-by-side comparison of different parts of the same

  3. Step 3

"Gang" the Reference Monitor and Program Monitor so that they both show the same frame of a sequence. This is useful for color-correcting tasks. For example, you can choose to set the Reference Monitor’s viewing mode to “vectorscope” and adjust while viewing the normal mode of the clip in Program Monitor.

  4. Step 4

To gang the monitors, go to the Reference Monitor and click on the "Gang" button. You also can go to the Reference Monitor’s panel menu and choose “Gang To Program Monitor.” Or visit the Program Monitor’s menu and choose “Gang To Reference Monitor.”
