Valentine’s Day is very near; this recipe makes for a very sweet and romantic gift for your special one. Brigadiers are small chocolate truffles that are named after a famous Brazilian Air Force Commander from the 40’s; his name was Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes. In Brazil, these treats are a must-have in every Birthday Party.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 stick of unsalted butter
  • 8 heaping Tbsp of any good quality cocoa powder, the better the brand the tastier they will be. For my kids at home, I just use Nesquik, because it tastes less bitter.
  • One 2-quart heavy saucepan
  • One 9-inch Pyrex Round dish

Step1
Use a 2-quart heavy saucepan. Pour the sweetened condensed milk, add the cocoa powder and the butter. Cook in low heat for about 20 minutes, constantly stirring until it starts to bubble up. Keep stirring until it thickens up and it becomes shinny. To check doneness, tilt the pan and the mixture should release from the bottom.
Step2
Pour the mixture in a 9-inch Pyrex dish and let it cool completely. Refrigerate for an hour. Butter your hands, scoop little amounts to form round balls, about 1 inch diameter.
Step3
Coat the chocolate truffles. Here are some suggestions: roll the balls in chocolate powder, chocolate or rainbow sprinkles, coconut flakes, chopped nuts or any other ideas you might come up with. Place them in small individual paper cups. You can decorate the truffles with a strawberry slice on top. This recipe makes about 25 truffles.
