Whether you are an aspiring author, professional, freelance writer, or dilettante, it is important to have a good relationship with your publisher. Here are some tips to keep you on the sunny side:

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • phone
  • internet
  • mail

Communication...

Step1
The best way to stay on your publisher's good side is to have good communication. Be sure to read all the way through any letters or emails, and take notes during phone calls so that you are clear on anything you agree to do.
Step2
Do not pester your publisher. You are not their only author. Keep communications short and to the point, and don't waste your publisher's time with things you should be doing for yourself.
Step3
Be polite, and do not bite the hand that feeds you. If you have a problem, work it out in private between you.
Be sure to let your publisher know what you appreciate before criticizing anything. Make it clear that you have given your trust and that you know and expect that trust will be honored.
Step4
Remember to thank your publisher for working with you. Let them know what you enjoy about being a part of their organization.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep communications short and to the point.
  • Don't pester your publisher. You are not the only author they are working with, nor are you their only responsibility.
