How to Read Microfilm

Microfilm is still used in many libraries throughout the country to store old newspapers, books, magazines and periodicals. Although the technology is technically obsolete and many people have never used microfilm machines, they remain the only way to access many older publications. Follow these steps to use the microfilm machine in your local library for genealogy or other research.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
If the machine is off, turn it on. The power switch should be clearly marked.
Step2
Find the spoke where the microfilm is loaded. This may be protected behind a door on the machine, but should also be marked clearly.
Step3
Place the microfilm onto the spoke and insert the loose end of the film into the nearby slot. If the machine is newer, it may begin to roll the microfilm automatically, much like a dollar bill receiver on a vending machine. If it is older, you may have to turn a nearby knob to begin reeling the film.
Step4
Look into the display to see the contents of the film. Knobs or buttons to control the reeling of the film should be prominently displayed on the front of the machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot locate the controls you need or have trouble loading the film, ask a library employee to help you.
  • Microfilm is delicate and can be damaged easily, so be careful when handling it.
