How to Bleach a Pine Cone

How to Bleach a Pine Cone thumbnail
Soaking pine cones in bleach gives them a pale, wintry look.

Pine cones make attractive decorations for autumn by themselves or in wreaths, potpourri or other crafts. Bleaching them white can give them a nice, frosty look for winter. If you don’t have any pine trees in your yard or nearby parks to provide you with free pine cones, buy them by the bag at craft stores.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture of half water and half bleach by adding the bleach to the bucket and slowly pouring in the water.

    • 2

Inspect each pine cone carefully and brush loose any dirt, mud, grass or other debris.

    • 3

Add the pine cones to the mixture and allow to soak for about 10 hours.

    • 4

Remove the pine cones and rinse them under cold water. Wear gloves while working with the bleach solution.

    • 5

Lay the pine cones outdoors to dry, preferably in the sun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take caution when using bleach to avoid contact with the eyes or exposure to children and pets.
