Pinecones make great decorations for autumn by themselves or in wreaths, potpourri or other crafts. Bleaching them white can give them a nice, frosty look for winter. Just follow these steps to whiten them safely and effectively.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pinecones
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Water
  • Plastic bucket
  • Sink
  • Rubber gloves
Step1
Create a mixture of half water and half bleach by adding the bleach to the bucket and slowly pouring in the water.
Step2
Inspect each pinecone carefully and brush loose any dirt, mud, grass or other debris.
Step3
Add the pinecones to the mixture and allow to soak for about 10 hours.
Step4
Wearing rubber gloves, remove the pinecones and rinse them under cold water in the sink.
Step5
Lay the pinecones outdoors to dry, preferably in the sun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take caution when using bleach to avoid contact with the eyes or exposure to children and pets.
