Unless you have a few hundred years to dedicate to your dog breeding you are unlikely to create a new breed. Today's designer dogs do not breed true.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A couple of centuries
  1. Step 1
    Duck Tolling Retriever
    Duck Tolling Retriever

Let us consider the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, it is mentioned in the 17th century. It was finally accepted as a breed by Canada in the 1950's, But it took until about 2000 for the AKC to accept it.

  2. Step 2
    True Breeds
    True Breeds

You will need lots of experience and a good vet
Lotsa money proper care of dogs and puppies is expensive.
Extensive research into the breeds you are mixing to ensure recessive genes causing hip problems, seizures etc. are not being added into the mix.

  3. Step 3
    Scotty pups
    Scotty pups

Designer dogs do not breed true so your cute little puggles aren't going to produce them. Or you could have a few dedicated family members weeding out the obvious defective ones, but your gene pool isn't going to be very big.

  4. Step 4

If you still insist on crossbreeds here are a few
Terrier + Bulldog = Terribull a dog that makes lots of mistakes.
Collie + Lhasa Apso = Collapso a dog you can fold up and put in your handbag.
New Foundland + Basset = Newfound Asset for a financial adviser

Tips & Warnings
  • Save money and time go to the local shelter and pick a cute mutt, that's all crossbreeds are.
  • Irresponsible breeding causes heath problems and is as bad as puppy mills

on 5/4/2008 I always thought the naming could be hard - especially if you mix a lhasa apso and and ****zu.
A Schipperke and a pug. : )
Seriously, thanks for the info. My Cookie is a "Bogle" Boston Terrier/Beagle mix.

on 2/23/2008 thank you for your comment I work closely with my shelter which is why these deliberate crossbreeds drive me crazy. Some of the best dogs I have met are at dog shelters my own beautiful mutt was saved from a kill shelter and brought to ny from Va unfortunately she developed seizures probably due to close inbreeding as she was rescued from the street but a sweeter dog you couldn't find

on 2/22/2008 Check with your local rescue. They will have crossbreeds as well. They are in need of adopters just like the shelters. Unfortunately, a lot of shelters are government run, so they become "kill" shelters. There are some shelters that are not "kill" shelters, they need money and volunteers to help. Rescue organizations work the same way as "no kill" shelters, they are always looking for donations whether it be monetary, food, blankets, cleaning supplies, crates, kennels, toys, I could go on and on. Rescues also depend on donations and adoptions to keep the organization afloat.

ALL breeds, including mutts, have a rescue. If you want to feel good and do something worthy, adopt a rescue dog!

on 2/21/2008 I loved your beginning and really the whole article. I have not seen anything like it before. I am learning "mutts" can be considered designer.

I like your warning and tips!
