How to Stay Safe at the Tanning Salon
Tanning salons allow people to stay golden all year round. Tanning booths at salons shine ultra-violet (UV) light on your skin to develop a tan -- at a risk. The intensity of the rays can damage the skin just as staying outdoors too long will do. The Purdue University Wellness Office recommends avoiding tanning salons all together. If you decide to tan, be sure to follow a few precautions can help you stay safe.

1
Wear goggles over your eyes. Tanning salons often supply goggles for your protection. Keep your eyes closed while tanning even while wearing goggles since the UV rays can damage your eyes.
-
2
Increase the time you spend in the tanning booth incrementally. Limit your tanning time to about two minutes the first time you try it, to avoid a sunburn. Ask the staff at the tanning salon if you are unsure about how long you should tan.

3
Allow at least 24 hours in between sessions in the tanning booth. Your skin continues to tan long after you leave the salon. Allow your skin to adjust to the first round of tanning before you return for more UV rays.
-
4
Avoid tanning salons if you have skin that burns easily. Only people whose skin tans easily should tan at tanning salons.
-
5
Wear sunscreen, even in the tanning booth. Sunscreen protects your skin from the UV rays while still allowing it turn golden.

Tips & Warnings
Use a tanning bed, but don't overdo it. It's best to go once or twice a week max.
Consult your doctor before tanning if you take any medications. Certain medications make your skin more susceptible to sunburn.
